The Truth About SPF in Foundation & Tinted Moisturizer
At Puzzle, we have been focused on reformulating our 2-in-1 Tinted Moisturizer & Foundation, ensuring it has the highest quality ingredients and flawless coverage for these hot Summer days. As we're working hand-in-hand with our scientists, we decided to make some changes — including removing SPF from our formula.
Before you freak — the main reason we decided to remove SPF from our foundation is because although many of us think it's enough protection for your skin — the science proved that it's not.
- Spectrum: Many makeup-based SPF products only protect against UVB rays, not UVA rays, which can cause more aging and skin cancer.
- Amount: People typically don't apply enough sunscreen to achieve the recommended amount, which is about a quarter-sized amount for the face.
- Application: People may forget to apply sunscreen to areas like their ears, lips, and scalp/hairline.
- Use at least 30 SPF as it will block 97% of UVB rays.
- Water resistance is highly recommended.

Then when you choose a tinted moisturizer or foundation to apply over top of your SPF, be sure to select a thinner formula because it will give you nice coverage and won't block your pores or muddy up your makeup.
This is where our Puzzle's formula ranks supreme!
Pro Tips for Summer Foundation Application
- Pre-Makeup Prep: Apply your SPF at least 10 minutes before your makeup.
- Tools of the Trade: Whether you prefer a brush or a blending sponge, the choice is yours. We recommend the Wedge Latex-Free Makeup Sponge for optimal control of the application process and ability to build your coverage to your desired results. PLUS it won't absorb and waste all of your foundation.
- Application Technique: Apply foundation all over your face and eyelids using a wedge sponge. To make the formula thicker but still look natural, you will need to use the thin side of the sponge. Apply from one side of the forehead to the other and repeat this makeup application all the way down to the chin. (The thinner makeup sponge side will make the formula thicker. The thicker makeup sponge side will make the formula thinner).

Setting the Look:
After you apply the foundation, we highly recommend applying Pressed Powder for better hold, coverage, & long-lasting wear. Apply pressed powder all over your face and eyelids with a powder brush. Use the body of the brush, not the head, in soft strokes. Start from one side of the forehead to the other side, inward outward, and repeat this application all the way down to the chin.
Embrace the power of a well-chosen foundation and SPF routine, and watch your skin transform into a ray of sunshine & confidence!
