The Scary Truth About Your Makeup's Shelf Life
It's time for some Spring Cleaning! Get ready to learn all about makeup expiration dates, the risk of using them after they expire, how to keep your makeup & yourself healthy, and how to prevent health risks from happening.
Like many other products, makeup has an expiration date, too! Makeup can also go bad before the expiration date as a result of not taking care of your makeup, brushes and tools properly. But don't worry, we'll be covering all of that for you today!
It's hard to know when makeup has expired or went bad, and the result of using your products under those conditions can lead to losing not only the quality of the product, but most importantly, increase the risk of bacterial contamination that can lead to:
- Infection
- Breakout
- Rash
- Pink eye
- Redness
- Pain
- Swelling
- Itchiness
To prevent this from happening, please take care of your makeup, brushes, and tools by:
- Not sharing your makeup with anyone — even friends & family.
- Wash your hands before applying makeup
- Not using your saliva to make the product wet or clean the extra makeup on your skin, or around your eyes.
- If you want to wet your makeup to make a bolder effect, etc. put some of it in a different container and discard after use as the water will allow bacteria to grow.
- Wash your tools with shampoo after use.
- Keep your makeup away from direct heat or sunlight.
- Don't go to sleep with makeup on! Always wash your face before bedtime.
- Don't reuse fake lashes strips. Throw them away after their first use.
- Don't buy makeup with harsh chemicals/ingredients!
Throw your makeup away if the product:
- Smells different.
- Color and texture have changed.
- If mold appears. Don't just remove the mold area. Simply throw it away!
- Past its expiration date.
